Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, feels his long-standing claims regarding the fiscal practices of the Tinubu administration have been validated by a recent U.S. Department of State report. According to Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media assistant, the report highlights significant shortcomings in how the Nigerian government handles budgetary disclosures and fiscal transparency.
The U.S. report notes that while the government publishes final budget documents, it consistently fails to release executive budget proposals in a timely manner. Furthermore, the report indicates that official documents lack a complete view of government revenue and spending, noting discrepancies between the approved budget and actual implementation. The Office of the Auditor-General was also flagged for failing to meet international independence standards and neglecting to produce substantive reports.
Atiku argues that these findings mirror his own warnings about the lack of accountability in the management of public funds. He maintains that citizens are entitled to full disclosure of government revenue and expenditure. Emphasizing that transparency is essential for economic stability, Atiku suggested that improved fiscal practices are necessary to boost investor confidence, address debt concerns, and fight corruption.
