US Clarifies Rationale for Israeli Presence in Lebanon

Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained that Israel’s military operations in Lebanon are solely a response to Hezbollah’s rocket and drone attacks, rather than a desire to claim territory.

The United States government has identified the specific cause for Israel’s military presence within Lebanese borders. During a press briefing held on Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that Israel maintains no territorial ambitions regarding Lebanon, despite the current military occupation.

Addressing inquiries about whether the US would push for an immediate Israeli withdrawal from the southern region of the country, Rubio stated that the presence of Israeli forces is exclusively driven by the threat of Hezbollah launching drones and rockets from that area. He stressed that Israel has been transparent about this motivation.

Rubio articulated that Washington advocates for an expanded role for the Lebanese military and government in exercising control over their own sovereign lands. He argued that as the Lebanese armed forces increase their security footprint in these areas, Hezbollah’s influence will diminish, which in turn would reduce the necessity for an Israeli presence.

Conversely, reports indicate that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other high-ranking Israeli officials have expressed no current plans to vacate southern Lebanon, where military operations remain active. This persistence continues even as international agreements regarding de-escalation are discussed. Furthermore, Israel’s defense minister noted that the US government has not issued a formal demand for an Israeli troop withdrawal.
