A high-stakes gathering organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State descended into disorder on Wednesday as preparations continue for the August 15 governorship election. Professor Joash Amupitan, the INEC chairman, visited the state earlier this week to consult with traditional leaders, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
The atmosphere at the Atlantis Hall meeting quickly soured. Confrontations broke out between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Accord party, creating significant disruptions. When State Police Commissioner Ibrahim Gotan attempted to address the attendees, his remarks were drowned out by opposing cheers and jeers from the two political camps. Similar hostility was directed at Hon. Bamidele Salam of the Imole Campaign Council, whose attempt to speak was interrupted by shouting from APC members.
Outside the venue, a group consisting mostly of women held a demonstration calling for a transparent and peaceful electoral process. Tensions were further escalated by accusations from APC Campaign Council spokesperson Remi Omowaye, who claimed the Accord party had organized the protest specifically to sabotage the INEC proceedings. Despite heavy security presence both within and surrounding the hall, the event remained volatile throughout the session.
