A severe health crisis is developing in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where at least 30 individuals have perished at the Kigonze displacement camp since early May. Health experts are increasingly worried that Ebola may be circulating within the vulnerable population of 15,000 residents.
The victims reportedly displayed classic symptoms of the virus, such as high fever, vomiting, and intense headaches. Camp representative Désiré Grodya Bapi noted that this surge in mortality is unprecedented, stating that such frequent deaths were previously unheard of at the site. The camp, which serves people displaced by long-standing regional violence, struggles with severe overcrowding, poor hygiene, and insufficient medical resources.
Containment efforts face significant hurdles. Medical teams report that families are refusing to allow health workers to perform post-mortem testing on bodies, complicating the verification process. Justin Zanamuzi of the Catholic charity Caritas confirmed that attempts to gain consent for medical examinations have been met with stubborn resistance.
Laboratory results from earlier this month identified Ebola in several individuals, leading authorities to suspect that the virus may be spreading quietly within the settlement. Residents, including Kato Lonu, who lost two children, describe a devastating environment where death seems constant. Aid organizations highlight that decreased international funding for sanitation and hygiene has left the camp defenseless against disease. Officials fear that with deep-seated mistrust and inadequate resources, the actual death toll from the outbreak, which was officially declared in mid-May, could be much higher than current estimates.
