A fresh surge of heat is expected to sweep across England and parts of Wales next week, with thermometers potentially climbing to 35C (95F). While the northern and north-western regions of the UK are receiving beneficial rainfall this weekend, the upcoming forecast suggests a return to heatwave conditions for many areas.
For many, this upcoming stretch may signify the fourth heatwave of the year. Currently, Usk in Monmouthshire and Exeter in Devon have maintained heatwave conditions for 20 straight days, a record for the year. A heatwave is officially recognized when temperatures remain at or above specific thresholds—ranging from 25C to 28C depending on the location—for three consecutive days.
Although cooler air temporarily eased the heat last weekend, high pressure is expected to build in the south next week, stalling weather fronts and trapping heat. While Scotland and Northern Ireland will remain relatively cooler, England and Wales are expected to experience temperatures between 25C and 32C. By next weekend, some models suggest an even stronger heat spike could push temperatures toward 35C, officially confirming a fourth heatwave. The Met Office clarifies that a heatwave status requires a widespread reach, rather than isolated hot spots.
