Trump Questions Blair’s Role on Gaza ‘Board of Peace’ Amid Iraq War Backlash
U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed uncertainty over whether former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair should serve on a proposed “Board of Peace” tasked with overseeing Gaza’s governance, pointing to widespread criticism of Blair’s involvement in the Iraq War.
“I’ve always liked Tony, but I want to make sure he’s acceptable to everyone,” Trump told reporters, without specifying which leaders might influence the decision.
The White House’s Gaza peace plan, unveiled last month, listed Blair as a potential board member. The board is intended to oversee reconstruction and administration in Gaza until a restructured Palestinian Authority can assume control.
Trump made his comments aboard Air Force One en route to Israel. He is expected to address the Knesset on Monday and attend a summit of world leaders in Egypt, where efforts are underway to formally end the Gaza conflict as the ceasefire enters its fourth day.
Meanwhile, Israelis are anticipating the release of the remaining 20 hostages believed to still be held by Hamas since its October 7, 2023 attacks that ignited the war.
Trump indicated that the Board of Peace would be established quickly but acknowledged doubts about Blair’s acceptance. “I want to make sure Tony would be popular with all sides because I’m not certain of that,” he said.
The idea of including Blair has faced strong opposition from Palestinian politicians, analysts, and members of the UK Labour Party. Blair’s reputation in Britain remains damaged due to his support for the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, based on claims of weapons of mass destruction that were later proven false.
