President Bola Tinubu led a gathering of dignitaries in Abuja on Monday to commemorate the one-year anniversary of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s passing. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu praised Buhari for his unwavering commitment and selfless service to the nation, stating that the late leader dedicated his life entirely to Nigeria.
Vice President Shettima reflected on the close bond between the two leaders, noting that President Tinubu had actively supported Buhari during his health struggles, including sending medical and logistical assistance to London. Shettima emphasized that true friendship is defined by how individuals support one another after they have left public office.
General Yakubu Gowon, a former Head of State, shared personal insights into Buhari’s character, highlighting the late president’s kindness. Gowon revealed that Buhari provided financial assistance to help pay for his children’s school fees when he was living in the United Kingdom, illustrating Buhari’s deep concern for others. Gowon also noted the mutual support between Buhari and Tinubu, which facilitated the current administration’s rise.
Other attendees, including Senator Atiku Bagudu and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, acknowledged Buhari’s dedication to national unity and his courageous efforts to combat security threats in places like Borno during his tenure. The event also served as an announcement for the upcoming Muhammadu Buhari Foundation and Centre, initiatives designed to document his legacy. High-profile figures, including Aisha Buhari and various traditional rulers, were present to honor the memory of the former president.
