Thomas Partey Joins Villarreal Amid Ongoing Legal Proceedings in England
Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has signed with La Liga side Villarreal, shortly after the expiration of his contract with the North London club.
The 32-year-old Ghanaian, who moved to Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for £45 million in 2020, left the Gunners at the end of June when his contract was not renewed.
Just four days after his departure, Partey was charged with five counts of rape involving two women, and an additional count of sexual assault against a third woman. He has denied all allegations and was granted conditional bail by Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
As part of the bail conditions, Partey is prohibited from contacting the three women involved and must inform police of any changes to his permanent residence or international travel.
In a statement, Villarreal acknowledged the legal proceedings, stating:
“The club is aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceedings in England. The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him. The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process.”
Citing UK legal restrictions, the club added it could not provide further comment on the matter.
The allegations stem from a police investigation that began in February 2022.
Meanwhile, public backlash has followed Villarreal’s decision to sign Partey. An online petition organized by The Villarreal Report, a content platform, has gathered nearly 1,000 signatures opposing the transfer.
Villarreal reiterated its commitment to ethical values in its statement:
“The club wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any act of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, or any behaviour that undermines the dignity of individuals.”
Partey is expected to join up with Villarreal on Friday. His next court appearance is scheduled for 2 September at the Old Bailey.
His signing comes just after Villarreal’s 3–2 pre-season victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
