Iran’s judiciary confirmed on Monday that two men were executed following convictions for spying on behalf of Israel. This action marks a continuing trend of capital punishment linked to espionage allegations in the country.
Tehran’s judiciary media outlet, Mizan, identified the men as Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat. Officials stated the pair were hanged for passing precise locations of key military and security installations to Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency. Although the dates of their arrests and legal proceedings remain undisclosed, authorities stated they were found guilty of collaborating with the Zionist regime to assist in hostile objectives.
Executions have increased in frequency since the regional conflict escalated on February 28, following widespread strikes involving the United States and Israel that resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader. Reports from organizations like Amnesty International and Iran Human Rights indicate that Iran maintains one of the highest execution rates globally, with 1,639 individuals put to death last year alone. Rights groups continue to criticize the government for the rising frequency of these state-sanctioned killings.
