Thirty-four-year-old Belgian international Thomas Meunier has officially joined Sunderland on a two-year deal following his departure from Lille. A prominent figure of Belgium’s recent football era, Meunier brings extensive top-tier experience from stints in Germany, Turkey, France, and his native Belgium.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Meunier stated that the chance to play in the Premier League was a primary motivator. He highlighted the club’s clear ambition and their upcoming participation in the Europa League as key reasons for his commitment. The defender, who secured three Ligue 1 titles during his tenure with Paris Saint-Germain, is expected to provide significant leadership.
Sunderland’s director of football, Florent Ghisolfi, praised the signing, noting that Meunier’s professional background and winning mentality would bolster the team. Ghisolfi expects the 83-cap veteran to be a positive influence both within the locker room and during match play.
