Solar System Fault Triggers Fire at Ilorin Plaza
A fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon at Akolapo Plaza, a two-storey commercial complex located on Oro Road in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The Kwara State Fire Service received the emergency call at approximately 4:19 p.m. and arrived quickly to find the blaze threatening a building that houses 18 separate shops.
Firefighters were able to successfully contain the flames, limiting the significant damage to just one unit and preventing a larger disaster within the plaza and the surrounding neighborhood.
According to an official statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, the fire was likely sparked by a technical failure in the building’s solar power infrastructure. Investigators believe a short circuit in the solar wiring ignited nearby flammable materials, leading to the sudden outbreak.
This incident follows a series of recent fires in the state, including the destruction of several container shops at Eyenkorin Roundabout and a major blaze at Owode Market in Offa earlier this month.
In response to the surge in electrical-related fires, Fire Service Director Alabi Muhammed emphasized the need for professional oversight when installing alternative energy sources. He cautioned business owners to ensure that solar systems are fitted with high-quality components and undergo regular maintenance by certified technicians.
Additionally, the agency advised the public to keep combustible items away from power hubs and to maintain functional fire extinguishers on-site for immediate intervention during emergencies.
