Sokoto Government Rolls Out 30 New Buses, Launches E-Ticketing System
The Sokoto State Government has introduced 30 new mass transit buses and a digital e-ticketing platform as part of efforts to modernize public transport and improve transparency.
With the new buses unveiled on Sunday, the total number of vehicles acquired by Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration now stands at 70.
At a handover event in Sokoto, Deputy Governor Idris Muhammed Gobir presented the vehicle keys to Bala Kokani, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation. Gobir explained that the buses had been held back until the digital ticketing platform was fully ready.
“Now that the e-ticketing system is operational, passengers can book and pay for their trips online, reducing delays and congestion at terminals,” he said.
He added that the initiative is designed to alleviate transportation challenges, especially in light of economic pressures caused by the removal of fuel subsidies. The new platform will also help enforce transparency and financial accountability in transit operations.
Gobir called on the transport ministry to strictly monitor the buses, maintain them regularly, and ensure cleanliness, emphasizing their status as public property bought with taxpayers’ money.
Commissioner Kokani, in receiving the buses, expressed gratitude to Governor Aliyu for his commitment to revamping the transport sector. He described the handover as a major step toward enhancing urban mobility in the state.
“We will take great care of these buses and maintain them properly,” Kokani assured.
The combined launch of the e-ticketing platform and the additional buses is expected to ease travel for residents, cut down on overcrowding, and create a more efficient and accountable transportation system in Sokoto.
