A severe windstorm hit the Gashu’a community, the administrative center of Bade Local Government Area in Yobe State, causing extensive damage to homes and property valued at millions of naira. The storm, which swept through the area on Wednesday evening, left many families without shelter and ruined essential goods and business infrastructure.
While residents have reported the potential death of four individuals, official confirmation is currently pending. One 65-year-old local observed that the event was unprecedented in scale and suggested that local deforestation likely worsened the impact.
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (Yobe SEMA) issued an update on Thursday regarding the disaster, which also impacted regions in Yunusari and Bursari. The agency is now coordinating with teams from neighboring areas like Jakusko and Nguru to evaluate the extent of the damage. Preliminary reports confirm that a large number of homes have been destroyed, leaving vulnerable populations in urgent need of assistance. Yobe SEMA has expressed its condolences to those affected and is prioritizing the assessment of these impacted communities.
