In a statement released Wednesday, Cruz asserted that instead of engaging with valid concerns from the United States, Nigerian authorities are prioritizing public relations efforts to counter their critics.
Cruz, who introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025, intends to impose sanctions on officials responsible for enabling the killing of Christians and enforcing strict blasphemy laws. The Senator argues that these officials have fostered a climate of hostility toward religious minorities by tolerating jihadist violence and institutionalizing Sharia and blasphemy statutes.
Highlighting the potential for diplomatic consequences, Cruz noted that his proposed legislation seeks to hold accountable those who facilitate such abuses. He also referenced past actions by President Donald Trump regarding the situation, while expressing concern that the Nigerian government remains emboldened to maintain its current stance on these human rights issues.
