Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has urged African nations to prioritize investments in the younger generation to modernize and sustain food production systems. Speaking at the 9th Africa Agriculture Science Week in Abuja, Kyari emphasized the necessity of empowering youth to ensure long-term food security across the continent.
During the introduction of the Youth in Agrifood Systems Performance Index (YAPI), Kyari highlighted the framework as a crucial tool for monitoring youth employment and identifying gaps in agricultural opportunities. This initiative, supported by the African Union and AGRA, aims to translate data into actionable policies that foster economic growth and create robust support systems for young entrepreneurs.
Dr. Janet Edeme of the African Union Commission noted that because youth make up 70 percent of Africa’s population, their involvement is vital to overcoming current industry hurdles. She reaffirmed the commitment of the AU and its partners to implement the YAPI report effectively. Additionally, Juliette Lampoh of AGRA pledged to assist young farmers by improving their access to financial resources, while entrepreneur Babra Kaikara stressed that prioritizing youth engagement is essential for the future of continental agriculture.
