The Department for Transport has announced that 18-year-olds will soon be eligible for half-price train tickets. Starting August 17, the 16-17 Saver railcard will remain valid for a full year after purchase, extending its benefits beyond the user’s 18th birthday.
Previously, the railcard expired once a traveler turned 18. This change allows 17-year-olds to purchase the card right before their 18th birthday, ensuring they maintain the 50% discount until the day before they turn 19. According to the government, the old policy caused over 70,000 students to lose roughly £175 in potential savings annually.
Costing £35 a year, the card provides half off most fares. Rail Minister Lord Hendy described the update as a practical measure to support teenagers starting work or continuing their education. Industry leaders and student representatives have welcomed the shift, noting it provides much-needed financial relief for young people commuting to college or employment. While 18-year-olds could previously use the 16-25 Railcard for a 33% discount, this new expansion offers significantly higher savings.
