The Plateau State Government has extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic railway accident that occurred at Phototek Junction in the Abattoir community of Jos South Local Government Area.
The accident, which happened on Wednesday, involved a passenger train travelling from Bukuru to Jos. The train collided with a tricycle that attempted to cross the railway line, resulting in the death of the tricycle rider and a passenger, while others sustained injuries.
In a statement released on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Transportation, Davou Gyang, described the incident as a painful reminder of the importance of obeying traffic rules, especially around rail crossings.
“We mourn with the families affected by this sad event. It is indeed a painful loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” the statement read in part.
The Commissioner further assured that the Ministry is collaborating with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and other relevant agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and implement measures to prevent future tragedies.
Gyang also urged motorists, tricycle operators, and pedestrians to strictly adhere to safety signs and signals at railway crossings, warning that disregard for such regulations poses grave risks to lives and property.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing transportation safety through public education, strict enforcement of traffic laws, and the improvement of safety infrastructure across the state.
