Isaac Dung, a 37-year-old resident of the Rantiya community in Plateau State, narrowly avoided death during a recent raid by armed men believed to be Fulani militia. The attack, which occurred on Thursday night in Rangarasa village, resulted in the deaths of two local vigilante members and left approximately 15 others wounded.
Dung was returning from his workplace when he spotted a large convoy of motorcycles entering his neighborhood. He estimated the group exceeded 100 individuals, all heavily armed. As the assailants began firing indiscriminately, chaos erupted throughout the village. Aware that a leg injury would prevent him from escaping on foot, Dung made a split-second decision to collapse and feign death.
The deception proved successful when the gunmen approached his position and concluded he was deceased after one shouted in Hausa, “the infidel is dead.” Once the attackers departed, Dung remained hidden in the surrounding bush for five hours before eventually trekking back home. He credits both his survival instinct and divine intervention for his escape.
