Pharmacy Council of Nigeria welcomes 86 new foreign-trained pharmacists

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria has inducted 86 foreign-trained pharmacists, mandating strict adherence to professional ethics while emphasizing their role in advancing local healthcare standards.

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) officially admitted 86 pharmacists trained abroad into the local healthcare workforce this past Monday. During the ceremony in Abuja, the Council emphasized that these professionals must strictly follow ethical and professional guidelines, cautioning that any form of misconduct will face serious consequences.

Registrar Ibrahim Babashehu Ahmed presided over the oath-taking event, which followed the completion of the 2026 Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Orientation Programme (FPGOP). This initiative is designed to transition international graduates into the Nigerian regulatory framework, covering essential topics such as local laws, ethical standards, and clinical practices.

Ahmed highlighted that while these pharmacists offer a wealth of international expertise, they are generally required to complete a one-year internship at a PCN-accredited facility. Those who already hold active licenses from their training countries, however, are exempt from this requirement. The Registrar also pointed to the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development program, which ensures pharmacists keep pace with scientific advancements and global safety standards.

Addressing the disciplinary process, the Council reaffirmed its commitment to public protection. Any reported professional misconduct is reviewed by an investigating panel and may be escalated to a disciplinary tribunal. Chairperson Hajia Wosilat Giwa urged the inductees to maintain their discipline and use their global exposure to improve pharmaceutical care within Nigeria. The event, chaired by Pharm. (Dr.) Luka Panya Baba, served as a formal welcome for the graduates as they begin their careers in the national health sector.
