On Tuesday, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State welcomed the delivery of two surveillance aircraft, marking a key milestone in his administration’s plan to improve regional security. The planes touched down at the Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan, fulfilling a commitment made by the governor one year ago to bolster aerial intelligence.
Governor Makinde explained that these aircraft are essential for managing the state’s expansive territory. By providing an aerial perspective, the planes will assist ground security forces in responding to emergencies more efficiently. He noted that while the procurement was not a direct reaction to recent kidnappings, the timing of the arrival is significant for the state’s safety measures.
Addressing concerns regarding the project’s timeline, the governor emphasized that his administration remains dedicated to its security strategy. He highlighted that ensuring the safety of residents is a prerequisite for economic growth and stability, noting that improved safety conditions have already allowed schools to return to regular schedules.
The aircraft will operate under a formal agreement with the Nigerian Air Force, which provided the pilots for the inaugural flight. This collaboration is designed to integrate advanced technology into the state’s existing security framework immediately. Makinde reaffirmed that protecting citizens remains his government’s primary focus as operations begin.
