OPay Expands ₦1.2bn, 10-Year Scholarship Scheme To Benue University
In a country where tuition is often a towering gatekeeping god, financial technology giant OPay has once again stepped in as a bridge-builder, extending its N1.2 billion 10-year scholarship initiative to the students of Benue State University (BSU). With this, BSU becomes the seventh torchbearer of a programme that is steadily becoming a symbol of hope for Nigeria’s underserved scholars.
The scholarship, aimed at bright but financially burdened students, cuts across disciplines and is built to free recipients from the shackles of tuition stress. This, OPay says, is about more than corporate social responsibility, it’s a legacy project.
“We are proud to support these future leaders… Education plays a vital role in nation-building,” said OPay CEO Dauda Gotring. “This scholarship is our way of helping young Nigerians reach their full potential.”
Benue State University’s Vice Chancellor (Admin), Prof Tor Iorapuu, hailed the initiative as a landmark gift that goes beyond mere charity.
“It provides a crucial safety net… empowering students to pursue their academic goals with confidence,” he remarked.
OPay’s scholarship scheme already rolled out in six other Nigerian universities is rooted in a long-term vision: to democratize access to higher education, fuel social mobility, and, ultimately, plant the seeds of national transformation through education.
With eyes set on expansion, OPay reaffirmed its promise to reach more institutions in the years ahead, pledging that no region, no potential, no dream will be left behind.
This initiative, the company asserts, is not just about funding books or clearing fees. It’s about restoring dignity, sustaining ambition, and investing in a future where the child of a roadside trader can sit in the same lecture hall as the child of a senator and thrive just the same.
