Ooni of Ife Urges INEC to Reduce Mounting Political Strain in Osun State

The Ooni of Ife has appealed to INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan to intervene in the growing political volatility in Osun State, calling for a free and fair election that respects the will of the people.

Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, has informed Prof. Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), that the political environment in Osun State has reached a breaking point. During a meeting at his palace on Tuesday regarding the upcoming gubernatorial election, the monarch expressed deep concern over the escalating tension.

The Ooni emphasized that traditional rulers across the state are united in their demand for a fair electoral process. He urged the commission to serve as an impartial arbiter, ensuring that citizens can cast their votes without intimidation or external pressure. He reminded the INEC leadership that their performance would create a lasting legacy for the nation.

Addressing the broader challenges, Prof. Amupitan highlighted the commission’s struggle with public skepticism and the rise of digital misinformation. He labeled the spread of false claims on social media as a form of citizenship terrorism. To combat this, the INEC chairman promised that the commission is committed to restoring confidence by conducting elections characterized by transparency, credibility, and fairness.
