The Ondo State branch of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has voiced deep frustration regarding the consistent relegation of Sunshine Queens FC to the Nigeria Women Football League Championship for three consecutive years. During a recent meeting in Akure led by Chairman Segun Giwa, the association labeled this ongoing decline as intolerable and urged the state government to overhaul local sports management.
Official documents signed by committee members, including Bolu-Olu Esho and Joseph Adesuyan, requested that the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) stabilize the current coaching staff led by Tayo Onilude. SWAN advocates for retaining key players who excelled during the 2025 President Federation Cup to ensure the team can quickly regain its top-tier status. Furthermore, the association encouraged Sunshine Stars FC to begin preparations early to facilitate a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League.
The association praised the Sunshine Stars U-19 squad for their impressive performance in the 2025 President Federation Cup and recommended keeping the group together for future development. Regarding the upcoming National Sports Festival in Enugu, SWAN emphasized the need for early planning, improved athlete welfare, and properly funded training camps. Additionally, they urged the state government to reactivate various dormant sports associations to foster grassroots growth and ensure that athletes who represent the state with distinction receive appropriate recognition and rewards.
