Oman has announced that negotiations with Iran regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz are showing progress. However, Tehran emphasized that any agreement would not immediately result in the reopening of the essential shipping lane. While both nations acknowledge that discussions are moving forward, a specific timeline for a resolution remains absent. The Omani foreign ministry has cautioned against any maritime attacks that could complicate these diplomatic efforts.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that while talks are in their concluding phases, reopening the strait depends on additional requirements being met. These include compensation from the United States for alleged violations of a June memorandum of understanding. Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, an Iranian security official, reiterated that the blockade will persist until the US addresses six specific demands, such as lifting naval restrictions on Iranian ports and unfreezing assets.
US Vice-President JD Vance noted that work is ongoing, emphasizing that diplomatic and military tools are being utilized to ensure regional security. Vance also rejected claims that Iran intended to charge tolls for passage through the strait. Tensions remain high, however, following reports from the UAE regarding a missile attack on an Adnoc tanker, and a separate incident involving a ship struck by a projectile off the Omani coast, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations.
