Ogun Customs Reports ₦259.8m Earnings and ₦4.63bn in Contraband Seizures

The Ogun I Customs Command generated ₦259.78 million in revenue and seized ₦4.63 billion worth of contraband between April and June 2026, marking a significant performance increase over the previous year.

Between April 1 and June 23, 2026, the Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service successfully generated ₦259.78 million in revenue. During this same window, the command intercepted smuggled goods valued at ₦4.63 billion in Duty Paid Value.

Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, highlighted these figures during a press briefing in Idiroko. He noted that the revenue collected reflects a 238 percent surge compared to the same period in 2025, when ₦76.81 million was recorded. This growth was attributed to the diligent enforcement of import and export laws.

The command executed 146 seizures, which included 2,807 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 9,482 parcels of cannabis, and large quantities of petroleum products. Among the notable interceptions were a truck carrying 2,427 smuggled tyres hidden under a ‘For Sale’ sign and another vehicle transporting rice beneath bags of cement. Afeni noted that in the latter case, officers apprehended a driver who attempted to ram his vehicle into a patrol team.

Regarding trade facilitation, the command oversaw the export of 20,972 metric tonnes of products, such as thermal coal and compressed natural gas, valued at ₦1.049 billion. This marks a stark improvement over the zero-export activity recorded during the same timeframe last year.

To combat illegal activities, the command collaborated with various agencies. They transferred illicit substances like cannabis and pharmaceutical products to the NDLEA and NAFDAC for further handling. Additionally, Afeni underscored the effectiveness of the Joint Border Security Committee in maintaining stability along the Nigeria-Benin border.
