Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged citizens to carefully consider the nation’s future trajectory as the 2027 general elections approach. Speaking on Tuesday at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, he emphasized the necessity for collective action to correct negative national trends.
Obi highlighted the critical importance of the 2027 elections in fortifying the country’s democratic framework. He voiced significant concerns regarding the shifting role of the judiciary, noting that while the courts previously acted as a pillar for democratic integrity, political interference has now compromised that reputation. Reflecting on his own past legal victory in Anambra State, he recounted how judges once reached decisions solely based on facts and merit, without personal or political influence.
The former governor criticized current judicial trends, suggesting that some contemporary rulings appear motivated by political loyalty rather than objective justice. He called upon Nigerians to move past current governance failures and advocate for ethical, responsible leadership. According to Obi, the nation possesses the potential for prosperity, provided that citizens unite to demand transparency and reject manipulation for the sake of future generations.
