NYPD Detective Dies In Colombia After Cosmetic Surgery, Husband Demands Probe
A New York Police Department detective and mother of three has died in Colombia following a cosmetic surgery procedure, sparking calls for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Detective Alicia Stone, 40, a 13-year NYPD veteran with the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau, was found unresponsive in her Cali hotel room around 6:30 a.m. on October 23. She was rushed to Fundación Valle del Lili Hospital, where she was pronounced dead just over an hour later.
Authorities listed her cause of death as “unspecified cardiac arrest.” Stone had undergone liposuction and a Brazilian Butt Lift a gluteal fat transfer procedure on October 16 and was recovering at a hotel while taking anticoagulants and pain medication.
Her husband, Michael Stone, told the New York Daily News he was blindsided by the call notifying him of her passing and is now seeking an autopsy and full investigation. “Something just doesn’t add up,” he said. “I don’t have the facts, and that’s what I need, the facts of what happened.”
Friends and colleagues described Alicia as “a loving mother of three and a dedicated public servant.” A fundraiser set up in her memory praised her compassion and service, noting that her death has “left a tremendous void” among family and fellow officers.
The Colombian National Police, the U.S. State Department, and consular officials have reportedly been notified, while the NYPD has allegedly dispatched a detective to Colombia to assist in the probe.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, BBL procedures popular but risky carry a higher complication rate than most cosmetic surgeries, primarily due to the risk of fat embolism and cardiac arrest.
