Nwabali Apologises After Playoff Defeat, Says Super Eagles “Gave Everything”

Stanley Nwabali has tendered a heartfelt apology to Nigerians after the Super Eagles’ dramatic exit from the 2026 World Cup race, saying the team fought with all they had but “our best wasn’t enough.”

Nigeria fell 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo in the African playoff final after a tense 1–1 draw stretched through extra time. Nwabali, who delivered two crucial saves during the shootout, could not overturn misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi. DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba sealed the victory with the final kick, sending his nation into the intercontinental playoffs.

In an emotional Instagram message on Sunday, Nwabali reflected on the weight of the loss. He said he once stood among the fans cheering the Super Eagles, so he understands the sting of disappointment that now washes over supporters.

He stressed that the team poured their hearts into the contest, but ultimately came up short and the players fully accept responsibility for the outcome.

His message resonated with the raw honesty of a player who knows the expectations of a nation and feels every bit of their frustration.
