The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has refuted allegations that the nation’s Eastern Ports are being ignored. The agency emphasized that the Federal Government is actively funding infrastructure improvements to boost port competitiveness and increase shipping volume. Kenechi Okaeze, the Rivers Port Complex Manager, delivered this message while representing Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola at a meeting with the Maritime Correspondents Organisation of Nigeria in Port Harcourt.
Okaeze clarified that maintenance and modernization projects are currently active throughout the Eastern region. She specifically highlighted the reconstruction and structural reinforcement of Berths Seven and Eight at the Rivers Port Complex, noting that these updates are designed to enhance efficiency and allow the port to handle larger vessels. Furthermore, authorities are working to deepen navigation channels, which will permit larger ships to dock directly, lower logistics expenses, and decrease the reliance on long-distance road transport for cargo.
Highlighting the strategic advantage of the Eastern Ports, Okaeze noted their closeness to vital commercial hubs. She stressed that revitalizing these facilities is essential for streamlining maritime logistics and alleviating the heavy burden on national road infrastructure. She also pointed out that higher vessel traffic will mitigate safety hazards linked to transporting goods over long distances by truck. Expressing a positive outlook, she promised that these infrastructure efforts would return the Eastern Ports to their essential role within Nigeria’s maritime industry.
