The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced an indefinite strike set to begin on August 10, 2026. This action follows the Federal Government’s failure to honor previous agreements and address ongoing concerns regarding workplace safety and professional welfare.
This resolution was formalised in a statement released after the group’s National Executive Council meeting and annual conference in Gombe. Dr. Muhammed Usman Suleiman, the NARD National President, explained that the strike is a necessary response to the government’s continued inaction on critical issues.
Dr. Suleiman highlighted that members are enduring poor working conditions, unpaid allowances, and inadequate facilities. Furthermore, he cited instances of intimidation and physical assault against doctors in certain federal institutions. Despite multiple discussions with government officials, these grievances remain unaddressed.
“Our members can no longer function under conditions that threaten their safety and professional status,” stated Dr. Suleiman. He called upon the Federal Government to meet their demands promptly to avoid a nationwide healthcare crisis. The recent conference, hosted by Prof. Yusuf Mohammed Abdullahi of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, emphasized the need for systemic improvements in the Nigerian healthcare sector.
