The Nigerian Federal Government has formally extended its congratulations to Abelardo Espriella following his success in the Colombian presidential runoff held on June 21, 2026. A statement released this Thursday in Abuja by Kimiebi Ebienfa, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the official recognition.
Ebienfa stated that Nigeria respects the democratic choice made by the citizens of Colombia and is eager to build a productive partnership with the incoming leadership before their scheduled swearing-in ceremony on August 7. He emphasized that both nations share fundamental values regarding peace, democratic governance, and long-term development.
Nigeria expressed its intent to bolster diplomatic ties and collaborative efforts in sectors such as security, trade, investment, and South-South cooperation. The message concluded with best wishes for Espriella as he prepares to lead his country toward increased prosperity. Espriella secured his victory with 49.66 percent of the vote, narrowly defeating rival Iván Cepeda, who received 48.70 percent.
