New Tax Ombud Office Launched to Safeguard Taxpayer Rights and Restore Confidence

The newly established Office of the Tax Ombud aims to protect taxpayers from administrative injustice and foster a more equitable relationship between the public and tax authorities.

The Nigerian government has officially activated the Office of the Tax Ombud, a significant addition to the nation’s fiscal framework aimed at protecting taxpayers from administrative overreach. This development aligns with broader economic reforms led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, focusing on enhancing domestic revenue mobilization through fair practices.

During a meeting with business editors in Lagos, Tax Ombud Dr. John Nwabueze explained that the new office functions as an independent mediator. It is designed to ensure equitable treatment and efficient dispute resolution, helping taxpayers avoid the high costs associated with prolonged litigation. Nwabueze stressed that while collecting revenue is necessary for growth, it must not discourage or alienate productive sectors.

The agency, established under the Joint Revenue Board Act of 2025, operates as a watchdog focused on administrative fairness rather than a judicial entity. It does not replace the Tax Appeal Tribunal or traditional courts, nor does it decide on specific tax liabilities. Instead, it mediates conflicts and identifies systemic issues within the tax collection process.

To simplify engagement for business owners, the office will soon launch a digital portal and a dedicated call centre. These tools will enable taxpayers to submit grievances, monitor the status of their disputes, and receive guidance. Dr. Nwabueze highlighted that the success of these reforms relies heavily on rebuilding public trust and maintaining an open line of communication between the state and the taxpaying community.
