Nasarawa State is working to improve its peacebuilding capabilities by partnering with Colombia. Gov. Abdullahi Sule hosted representatives from the Colombian government and the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) at the Government House in Lafia to discuss strategies for preventing extremism.
The collaborative mission focuses on reconciliation, reintegration, and involving more women in peace initiatives. Gov. Sule noted that Colombia’s historical experience in overcoming internal conflict provides valuable lessons for Nasarawa. He has instructed local agencies to participate in a two-day training workshop to ensure these methods are applied effectively throughout the state.
Amb. Abimbola Wonosikou, representing the NCTC, explained that Nasarawa was chosen for this project due to its specific security situation. The initiative falls under the South-South Cooperation framework between Nigeria and Colombia. Mariana Hernández, the head of the Colombian delegation, stated that the group aims to exchange knowledge while supporting local peace efforts.
A primary goal of the workshop is to empower 80 women who have been impacted by violent extremism. Hernandez praised the governor for his commitment to promoting women in leadership roles and peacebuilding activities.
