The Southwest Zone D branch of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has requested that all higher learning institutions in Osun State suspend activities temporarily during the upcoming governorship election scheduled for August 15. The association highlighted potential safety risks to students as the primary reason for this call.
Comrade Adeyemo Josiah, the NANS Southwest Zone D Coordinator, stated that this decision followed discussions with various student leadership bodies. Reports from campus officials indicated that rising political hostility in student residential areas prompted this intervention. According to Josiah, students should not be subjected to the dangers of election-related violence.
NANS has given the Osun State government, security officials, and school administrators seven days to meet with student leaders to discuss safety protocols. Josiah emphasized that this request is not politically motivated, but rather a necessary safety precaution. He argued that while academic schedules can be adjusted, the preservation of student lives must remain the top priority. The association warned that they are prepared to take peaceful, lawful measures if their concerns remain unaddressed within the given timeframe.
