The Metropolitan Police are looking into financial contributions made to Reform UK by a company under the control of the party’s deputy leader, Richard Tice. BBC News has confirmed the probe involves two payments totaling 500,000 pounds, processed through the firm Britain Means Business shortly before the 2024 general election.
These funds originated from Fiona Cottrell, a notable donor to the party. Tice, who chaired the party during the time of the transactions, stated he was unaware of the investigation and questioned whether the police were participating in a coordinated effort against the party. The ongoing inquiry focuses on potential breaches of legislation regarding election financing, specifically rules that prohibit the disguising of funds from prohibited sources.
Authorities are examining a total of four donations, including two sent directly by Fiona Cottrell and two via Tice’s company. Records indicate that Reform UK experienced a temporary freezing of its bank account during the same period, though the specific cause remains undisclosed. The police investigation is being conducted by the Special Enquiry Team and involves alleged offenses under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. While two individuals have been interviewed under caution, no arrests have occurred.
Additionally, the National Crime Agency is conducting an internal review following complaints from Richard Tice and Nigel Farage regarding the potential unauthorized disclosure of private financial records. These issues also involve George Cottrell, the son of the donor, who has previously faced legal proceedings for fraud in the United States. Reform UK continues to assert that it adheres to all regulatory requirements regarding political funding.
