McCullum Prepared to Reconnect with Captain Stokes

Brendon McCullum expects captain Ben Stokes and bowler Gus Atkinson to be available for the series-deciding third Test against New Zealand after their recent absence.

England head coach Brendon McCullum expressed confidence in his partnership with Ben Stokes, anticipating the captain will return for the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. Stokes and bowler Gus Atkinson were previously sidelined for the second Test due to an ongoing investigation regarding a nightclub incident in London.

Despite recent challenges, including a disciplinary issue involving a curfew breach following the first Test victory, McCullum emphasized that their shared commitment to improving English cricket remains solid. The coach noted that he has been in daily contact with Stokes since the incident occurred on June 8 and mentioned that England director of cricket Rob Key had also engaged with him.

Stokes recently showcased his form with a 95-run innings for Durham before being withdrawn from county duties alongside Atkinson to prepare for the upcoming series decider. While the formal investigation process continues, McCullum expects both players to be available for selection. He aims to shift the team’s focus toward tactical execution at Trent Bridge, viewing the recent distractions as a hurdle to overcome while striving to secure a series win against a formidable New Zealand squad.
