Enzo Maresca has officially begun his tenure as manager of Manchester City, stepping into the role previously held by Pep Guardiola. Having served as an assistant during the club’s 2022-23 Treble-winning season, Maresca returns to lead a side that achieved immense success under his predecessor, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.
Speaking to media in Seoul during the pre-season tour, Maresca addressed the inevitable comparisons to Guardiola. He described the task as a unique privilege rather than an impossible burden, noting that he seeks to evaluate the squad and club operations through his own lens. To mark his arrival, he has relocated his office space, while his predecessor’s former office has been repurposed.
Outside of coaching, the new manager spent part of his off-season exploring artificial intelligence, highlighting how modern managers are increasingly turning to new technologies for marginal gains. Tactically, Maresca noted that the Premier League has evolved significantly in the last three years, specifically regarding the heavy reliance on set-pieces and man-to-man defensive structures.
Maresca also provided updates on his backroom staff and his approach to leadership. He emphasized the importance of his assistant, Danny Walker, and noted that he intends to personally select a new captain. While a leadership group currently features players like Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland, and Rodri, Maresca plans to integrate a homegrown player into that hierarchy. As he prepares for the upcoming Community Shield, the manager faces several immediate personnel decisions that will set the tone for his debut campaign.
