Although Infantino argued that the move would boost revenue for member nations, the proposal drew widespread condemnation. Three continental confederations blocked the plan, forcing the FIFA chief to abandon the initiative entirely. Reports suggest that Infantino held urgent meetings in Morocco to regain trust among FIFA directors.
Figo, writing for the Daily Mail, characterized the FIFA president’s actions as dishonest and self-serving. He emphasized that attempting to push through such monumental changes without proper consultation is unacceptable. The Portuguese icon stated that Infantino has damaged the prestige of his office and failed those who dedicate their lives to the sport. According to Figo, Infantino has lost the backing of his senior advisors and should resign immediately rather than waiting for the upcoming election cycle.
