Eighteen-year-old defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe has become a standout figure during Liverpool’s pre-season campaign under manager Andoni Iraola. Following his transfer from Austria Vienna for £2.6 million, the 6ft 6in teenager has taken advantage of defensive absences—including injuries to Joe Gomez, Jeremy Jacquet, and Giovanni Leoni—to earn significant playing time.
Despite impressing fans and teammates, including Virgil van Dijk who labeled him a significant talent, Ndukwe faces a major complication regarding his eligibility. Current post-Brexit work permit regulations prevent him from participating in competitive English matches because he has not yet met the required points threshold. Liverpool currently lacks the Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) slot needed to bypass this, as their single available spot is held by Mor Talla Ndiaye.
To gain the necessary points for a Governing Body Endorsement, Ndukwe is expected to head out on loan. His agent, Georg Lederer, is currently evaluating options to place the defender in a high-level league where he can secure the 15 points needed for a visa. Should he succeed in earning those points during a loan spell, there is a possibility he could be recalled to Anfield by January, provided he secures the required work permit by that time.
