Scottish athlete Laura Muir has decided to enter the 5,000m race at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 33-year-old, who captured 1500m gold during the 2022 Birmingham Games, is using this move to build her physical endurance for future major competitions, including the 2028 Olympics.
Although she holds the British record for the mile, Muir opted for the longer 5,000m distance because the 1500m field has become increasingly competitive. She views this shift as a strategic experiment to bolster her strength for upcoming world championships and long-term goals. Muir recently finished behind Sarah Calvert at the British Championships, though Calvert will also represent Scotland at these games.
The 39-member Scottish track and field squad also features prominent names such as Olympic silver medalist Josh Kerr, 800m British champion Jake Wightman, and 10,000m Commonwealth titleholder Eilish McColgan. Paralympic gold medalist and world record holder Ben Sandilands serves as the primary figure for the para-athletics team.
