On Wednesday, a commercial dispatch rider lost his life after being struck by a fuel tanker on Kodesho Road in Ikeja, Lagos. The incident took place around noon near the MRS Filling Station as the tanker, carrying 33,000 litres of groundnut oil, navigated the area. The driver of the tanker, identified with registration number T-19089 LA, attempted to leave the scene without providing aid.
Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) successfully intercepted the vehicle following a pursuit. The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed that officers apprehended the driver and subsequently transferred him and the tanker to the Area F Police Command in Ikeja for further legal proceedings. LASTMA personnel also worked to clear the site and maintain traffic flow.
Bakare-Oki expressed his sympathy for the victim’s family, calling the event a tragedy that could have been avoided. He warned drivers of large vehicles that speeding and fleeing the scene of an accident are serious violations that will face strict legal consequences. The agency remains dedicated to road safety and continues to coordinate with the Nigeria Police Force to protect commuters.
