The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has shuttered six steel and iron factories located within the Odogunyan Industrial Layout in Ikorodu. This enforcement action, ordered by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, aims to ensure all local firms adhere to state environmental standards.
The targeted facilities include African Steel Nigeria Limited, Sunflag Steel Nigeria Limited, Landcraft Steel Nigeria Limited, Pulkit Alloy Nigeria Limited, Top Steel Nigeria Limited, and Germini Steel Nigeria Limited. Officials stated that these closures were triggered by onsite inspections that revealed significant environmental infractions.
Investigators identified that the companies were releasing various hazardous materials into the atmosphere, including black and brown dust, mill scale, dead dust, and non-metallic particles. These emissions significantly degrade local air quality and jeopardize public health. Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, emphasized that manufacturers must implement sustainable practices and install adequate pollution control systems. He further noted that the state government will continue to penalize any industrial operations that ignore safety regulations to safeguard the health of Lagos residents.
