Former Kano State Governor Kabiru Gaya has clarified the context behind his recent session with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, which also included Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senator Rufai Hanga. In a conversation with the BBC Hausa service, Gaya noted that the invitation stemmed from discussions with APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, both of whom urged him to rejoin the ruling party.
Gaya highlighted that Yilwatda confirmed the President and other party leadership are mindful of his history with the organization. Reflecting on the origins of the APC, Gaya described himself as a founding member who worked alongside Tinubu. He recalled their collaboration in selecting the party’s broom symbol before their initial electoral success.
Following these interactions, the Presidency invited Gaya, Jibrin, and Hanga to speak with Tinubu. During this dialogue, Gaya expressed his concern that original party founders had been sidelined after the APC gained power. He clarified that the discussion did not involve specific political deals or promises of appointments. Instead, the President invited them to participate in the administration they helped build. Gaya stated his return is motivated by patriotism and a commitment to service, adding that he is prepared to take on any tasks the party requests, as he is not seeking a Senate seat at this time.
