British tennis player Jack Draper has withdrawn from the Mubadala DC Open in Washington shortly before the event was scheduled to begin. The 24-year-old, who previously held the British number one title, continues to suffer from a persistent bone bruising issue in his serving arm.
Although Draper had expressed optimism about his fitness following training sessions with his new coach, Andy Murray, the recurrence of pain forced him to exit the ATP 500 competition on Monday. This situation mirrors his recent withdrawal from Wimbledon, where he similarly opted out shortly before his opening match.
Draper, currently ranked 147th globally, has struggled with limited match play over the past year, participating in only 15 matches during that period. He previously noted that managing this complex injury requires a delicate balance between pushing himself and avoiding further damage. Despite this setback, the player hopes to recover in time for upcoming events in Montreal and Cincinnati, building toward the US Open in late August.
In Washington, lucky loser Mackenzie McDonald will step in to take Draper’s place in the draw.
