Injured Alcaraz Withdraws From Madrid Open

Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Madrid Open due to a hamstring and groin injury sustained during the Barcelona Open final against Holger Rune. Despite the setback, the world number three remains optimistic about recovering in time for his French Open title defence later in May.

“In a week or two I shall return to training, but I will take it step by step,” Alcaraz said.

“I couldn’t practice the entire week. I needed to listen to my body and make the right decision.

“I don’t want to get too far ahead but I hope I shall be ready for the French Open.”

The Spaniard, who has already claimed the Madrid title twice and recently won the Monte Carlo Masters, received treatment mid-match in Barcelona but continued to play, eventually losing 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Alcaraz plans to compete at the Italian Open in Rome, which kicks off on May 6, ahead of the French Open starting May 25.
