Rubby Emele, the Imo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has urged residents of the Umuojisi Autonomous Community in Ideato South LGA to keep the peace. This appeal follows public demonstrations against the potential appointment of Chinedu Uzoukwu as the community monarch.
Protesters gathered at the Commissioner’s office to demand a suspension of the coronation, arguing that the selection process disregards local customs and interferes with ongoing legal disputes. Chief Donatus Irokansi, a leader among the demonstrators, stated that previous petitions from the Eze-in-Council have been ignored, creating concern that the conflict may worsen. He emphasized that the community prefers a peaceful resolution and pointed out that the throne has historically been passed through family lines. He further argued that the government should refrain from issuing a Staff of Office until the court reaches a final verdict.
Community youth representative Friday Ihabotu cautioned that imposing a leader could lead to significant social instability. Supporters of the movement identify Uchenna Nwachukwu, the son of the late Eze Ernest Nwachukwu, as the rightful successor. Mrs. Elizabeth Eze, speaking for the women’s wing, noted that Uzoukwu is not a member of the royal family. Additional residents expressed frustration, alleging that the current path to the throne is driven by wealth rather than adherence to hereditary traditions.
In her address, Commissioner Emele promised that the state government would conduct a thorough investigation into the claims. She encouraged the community members to maintain order and avoid any actions that might escalate local tensions.
