The Imo State branch of the Action Peoples Party has formally denounced the reported interruption of a town hall assembly held by the Nigeria Democratic Congress this past Tuesday in Umuoyima, Owerri. The party issued a statement via its publicity secretary, Steve Nnadi, citing video footage that allegedly shows a governor’s aide and political associates forcing attendees to flee the venue.
According to the APP, the confrontation resulted in multiple injuries, requiring medical care for some participants. This event follows a similar reported incident involving Mbadiwe Ogugua, an APP candidate for the Ideato North State Constituency. The party characterized these actions as a violation of constitutional rights, including the freedom of assembly and association.
The APP has urged Governor Hope Uzodimma to discipline his staff and supporters to prevent further lawlessness. Additionally, the party requested that the Imo State Police Command investigate the disruption and pursue legal action against those responsible. The organization emphasized that it remains committed to peaceful political participation and called upon the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that all political groups can operate without threats of violence or interference.
