The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has officially cleared Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff, regarding the controversy involving the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC). The agency determined that the documentation provided by Adeniyi Adeyemi Mathew was fabricated.
Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, the ICPC Chairman, shared these results on Wednesday in Abuja. This update arrived one month after President Bola Tinubu ordered an inquiry into the fraudulent organization. Aliyu confirmed that he updated the President on the findings, noting that the investigation aimed to uphold government transparency.
The probe confirmed that neither the Federal Government nor any official body appointed Adeniyi Adeyemi Mathew to any position. Furthermore, the supposed council, also known as the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, lacks any legal foundation or existence in government records. The ICPC noted that the suspect used forged paperwork to impersonate a Director-General and hijack the identity of the former Presidential Economic Advisory Council.
While the investigation highlighted failures in oversight that allowed this fraud to persist, it found that the State House and the Central Bank of Nigeria maintained proper internal protocols. No public money was released to the fraudulent entity. Consequently, the ICPC has cleared Gbajabiamila of any involvement, though the broader investigation remains ongoing.
