Ibrahim Babangida and Olatunji Disu to Headline Vanguard’s 40th Anniversary Book Launch

Former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida and IGP Olatunji Disu will lead the launch of a new book documenting the 40-year history of Vanguard newspaper.

General Ibrahim Babangida, a former Nigerian Head of State, and Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu are set to anchor the unveiling of The Vanguard Chronology: 40 Years of Nigeria’s Leading Tabloid. This book commemorates four decades of reporting by the Vanguard newspaper.

Organized by the Vanguard Media Alumni Association, the event takes place on August 19, 2026, at the Grandeur Event Centre in Oregun, Lagos. It recognizes the newspaper’s impact on journalism and national growth while honoring the legacy of founder Sam Amuka, who recently turned 91.

Inspector-General Disu is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech focused on the role of media in addressing national insecurity. Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Governor of Ogun State, will preside over the ceremony, and Dr. Gbemiga Ogunleye, former Punch editor, will conduct the book review.

Pastor Eyobong Ita, Chairman of the alumni group, noted that the book archives Vanguard’s history, including its investigative work and its influence on political and cultural narratives. The publication also serves as a tribute to the professionals who established the paper’s reputation. Following the presentation, the book will be made available for sale to the public.
