Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has launched a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the May 15, 2026, kidnapping of students and teachers in the Esiele and Yawata regions of Oriire Local Government Area. The governor established the panel to clarify the facts and address rumors suggesting his administration was involved in the abduction.
Addressing officials at the Government House in Ibadan, Makinde noted that the incident was unfairly politicized. He argued that while the victims were safely returned, the government must secure accountability to prevent future security lapses. The governor shared a personal perspective, noting that his own father was a teacher, and emphasized that the safety of schools is essential for society.
The commission, led by retired Court of Appeal Justice Professor Mojeed Owoade, is tasked with identifying institutional failures and recommending security improvements. Makinde stressed that the panel must operate with total impartiality and professional integrity.
Although the governor provided a four-week window for the report, he assured the committee that extensions would be granted if needed to ensure a comprehensive investigation. Justice Owoade promised that the inquiry would rely strictly on evidence and facts, ensuring a transparent process for all Nigerians.
